Yes. You can 100% use PermaWhite safely at home to polish away tooth stains, from stubborn dark stains, to yellow long term stains, to more recent food stains. 

Wikipedia states “The enamel surface is strong enough to withstand repeated tooth polishing, but it should be avoided on newly erupted teeth, exposed root surfaces and areas of demineralization.” 

Just to be clear, your teeth's enamel IS a finite resource that helps to protect the sensitive layers below. As the enamel becomes damaged, that's it, there is no replacement. Yet, with gentle dental polishing such as from PermaWhite™, you can preserve your dental enamel:

1. The polishing heads are fine-sized to effectively target stains whilst avoiding healthy white tooth enamel
2. The polishing helps to reduce the bacteria and plaque that contributes to enamel erosion. So tooth polishing done properly is actually better for your teeth than not polishing.

To minimize any risk, should you feel any tooth sensitivity stop polishing immediately. You may try again after 3-5 days. 

For maximum safety use polishing pastes and toothpastes which contain fluoride. This can assist in remineralizing the outer layer of your teeth.

There are two types of teeth stains: Extrinsic (on the surface of the enamel) and intrinsic (underneath the tooth enamel). PermaWhite™ is highly effective at removing extrinsic/external stains but not intrinsic/internal stains.

Extrinsic stains are usually caused by food and tobacco use, whereas intrinsic stains are usually caused by an oral injury, the use of certain types of medications (particularly tetracycline), or overexposure to fluoride. As you grow older, your outer enamel can also wear away, exposing the yellow dentin underneath. If in doubt about the nature of your tooth stain please consult your dentist.

It depends on the severity of the tooth’s stain and your general tooth health. Generally we recommend you use PermaWhite™ for a maximum of one to two minutes per tooth every 2-3 days for dark stubborn stains. 

Although PermaWhite™ is gentler than other tooth polishers, users have to be wary of fatigue which may cause slips or have the opposite effect of making you press harder than needed. Remember you are polishing your teeth, not scrubbing or scouring them.

As an analogy, think of sandpaper which has different levels of coarseness. PermaWhite™’s silicon heads have a finer polishing surface than competitors. As a general rule of thumb, the more abrasive the polishing agent, the more effective the polishing effect, and the higher the risk of damage to the tooth’s enamel.

Customers have reported positive results with normal and whitening toothpaste. Care should be taken when polishing with whitening toothpaste which can increase tooth sensitivity.

The American Dental Association (ADA) states that baking soda is safe for daily use for brushing teeth. For polishing teeth, we recommend using baking soda no more than twice a week.

You can test these first for effectiveness before buying a more specialized polishing paste which contains hydrogen peroxide or microbead abrasives.

Activated charcoal is much more abrasive and we do not recommend its use.

If you are using fluoride in your tooth polishing process, you should wait at least 30 minutes before eating to ensure its absorption. There is no need to wait if you aren’t using any fluoride.

In addition, we advise waiting 4-8 hours before eating foods that could stain or discolor your teeth.

Beverages like tea, coffee, cola, fruit juice, and red wine might cause dental discoloration. 

Also tomato-based foods (e.g. pasta bolognese), turmeric (curries), and balsamic vinegar.

Rinse thoroughly after consuming the above food and drink to minimize any tooth stains.
